Abstract
Exposure of poliovirus-infected cells to guanidine for 15 min or 120 min at the end of the latent period causes 90- to 120-min delay in viral growth after removal of inhibitor by washing. The amount of guanidine associated with the cells after washing does not appear to interfere with viral growth. The delay in viral growth caused by guanidine can be partially overcome with inhibitors of proteases, TPCK and TLCK and incubation at 3 °C. The data suggests that guanidine stimulates turnover or modification of viral proteins.
