Abstract
Pigments isolated from culture filtrates and mycelia of Alternariasolani were shown to be 5-hydroxy-7-methoxy-2-methylanthraquinone (1, 2-methylxanthopurpurin-7-methylether), 7-methoxy-2-methyl-3, 4,5-trihydroxyanthraquinone (2), 3,5-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-2-methylanthraquinone (3, macrosporin), 7-methoxy-2-methyl-1,2,3,4,5-pentahydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroanthraquinone (5, altersolanol A) and 7-methoxy-2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2,3,5-trihydroxyanthraquinone (8, altersolanol B). 3 has been described previously and may have chemotaxonomic significance. Compounds 5 and 8 represent a new type of naturally occurring, reduced anthraquinone.
