Abstract
A new hemoglobin electrophoretically indistinguishable from hemoglobin E is described. It was found in a Canadian woman of mixed Dutch and Scottish parentage and was inherited from the Scottish father. Analysis of the tryptic peptides of the whole globin and of the isolated β chain showed that a substitution of glutamic acid by lysine had occurred at position 22 (B4 in Watson and Kendrew's helical notation) of the β chain. In hemoglobin E there is a similar substitution at position 26 (B8) of the β chain.
