Abstract
The construction of a new type of rocket-borne magnetometer as proposed by Kavadas and Koehler is described. The preliminary results of the first flight of the prototype instruments are presented. It is shown that the instrument is quite sensitive and can measure changes in the environmental magnetic field of a few γ's. During the first flight, a localized current in the ionosphere was detected at an altitude of 110 km.
