Abstract
A class of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds is considered for which the metric is [Formula: see text], where χ and f are functions, [Formula: see text] is a flat metric, and [Formula: see text] is a cotangent field. The observed behavior of planets and electromagnetic waves is compatible with a special form of this metric. A number of possible field equations are discussed. Weber's observations of oscillations in the gravitational field are compatible with the metric only if the oscillations are not wavelike.
