ANTIGENICITY OF 5-HYDROXYINDOLE-3-ACETIC ACID, A DERIVATIVE OF SEROTONIN: II. ANTIBODIES SPECIFIC TO 5-HYDROXYINDOLEACETIC ACID

Abstract

Precipitating antibodies specific to 5-hydroxyindoIeacetic acid (5HIAA) were produced in rabbits by immunization with conjugates of bovine γ-globulins containing 28–30 residues of 5HIAA covalently coupled per globulin molecule. The specificity of anti-5HIAA antibodies was demonstrated by immunodiffusion and by hapten inhibition of precipitation by appropriate univalent derivatives of 5HIAA, viz. 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetylaminocaproic acid and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT).The anti-5HIAA antibodies produced in rabbits had the capacity of neutralizing the effect of exogeneous 5HT on capillary permeability in mice, and were capable of inhibiting only partially the passive cutaneous reactions in mice.
