Abstract
A model is presented that accounts for the effect of conduction currents on the electrodeless breakdown of gas contained in glass bulbs immersed in 60-Hz alternating fields that are either linearly or circularly polarized. It is suggested that photoconductivity of the glass, induced by photons from the breakdown plasmas, significantly affects the dependence of the breakdown frequency on the applied field strength.
