Abstract
An unusually large long-range hyperfine coupling to γ-phosphorus has been observed in nitroxide 2. The magnitude of the coupling is ascribed to the rigidity of the ring system and the consequent importance of conformations like 7. The radical forms upon lengthy exposure of 1 to air. It may also be prepared by standard methods, and is stable over a period of months at 0 °C. Transient and as yet unidentified radicals are observed during the oxidation of 1 to 2 with aryl peracids.
