Abstract
The analysis of esters of saturated fatty acids isolated from marine lipids, or of the saturated esters produced by hydrogénation of whole ester mixtures, must be carried out on both polar and non-polar columns to obtain adequate qualitative identification and quantitative estimation of minor saturated components. On packed columns linear odd-numbered, Iso, Anteiso, and multiple-branched acids such as pristanic (2,6,10,14-tetramethylpentadecanoic), phytanic (3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadecanoic), and 4,8,12-trimethyltridecanoic acids can be determined. On open-tubular (capillary) columns the foregoing acids and additional minor components are more readily determined. Polyester (butanediol succinate) open-tubular columns do not show the effect of shift of retention time with relative concentration, whereas this may be a severe handicap in reliable use of silicone (SE-30) open-tubular columns. High-efficiency polyester open-tubular columns partially resolved stereoisomers of pristanic and phytanic acids.
