Abstract
The conventional classification of theories of gravitation (flat spacetime, monometric, bimetric, etc.,) is ambiguous. We illustrate the difficulties by describing a class of theories in which the metric is a function of a flat metric and a covector field. The extent to which the flat metric is determined by the algebraic conditions and field equations is analyzed. The results resolve problems of uniqueness in some previously developed theories.
