Abstract
The rate of decay of metastable krypton atoms in the 1s5 state has been measured in the range 0.2 to 1.8 mm Hg of krypton pressure. The measured values of decay time τ can be fitted to a theoretical curve 1/τ = 30/p + 75p + 44p2∙ (p = pressure in mm). The effects of collisions with electrons have been estimated. Comparison with previous measurements of destruction frequencies in neon and argon show that the relative importance of three-body collisions is greater for krypton than for the other two gases.
