Abstract
From a study of the trajectories of individual particles in a cusp magnetic field, we have developed an experimental technique to measure the diameter of the nonadiabatic region. We have shown that the adiabatic parameter is useful for distinguishing between adiabatic and nonadiabatic particles, and we have measured the critical adiabatic parameter for the first time. We observe that the experimentally determined value of this parameter is slightly different from that estimated by Van Norton and calculated by Namba et al.
