Abstract
The infectivity and hemagglutination titers of influenza viruses were studied after treatment at different pH values during 4 hours at 37 °C.Influenza viruses appeared to be acid-labile. The loss of infectivity of influenza viruses varied within each type, since strains of type B were more labile than those of type A. Moreover, it appeared clearly that equine influenza virus is more resistant to acid than human strains. The acid pH alters more readily the hemagglutinating activity of influenza virus than its infectivity. These experiments would imply that at first there is a rapid destruction of surface protein complexes followed by a less rapid denaturation of nucleoproteins.
