Abstract
The base-induced alkylation of 4-unsubstituted homophthalimides with 1-bromo-2-chloroethane produced the spirocyclopropane compounds 4. The structures of these compounds were supported by their spectral properties and by their susceptibility towards cleavage of the three-membered ring with secondary amines.Under similar conditions, 3-unsubstituted oxindoles also yielded spirocyclopropane compounds 7, but 4-hydroxycarbostyril gave the 4-O-alkylated compound 8 instead.
