Absence of normal cell wall constituents from the outer layers of Halobacterium cutirubrum

Abstract

Neither D-amino acids nor teichoic acid were detected in mechanically prepared envelopes of Halobacterium cutirubrum. If a rigid layer is responsible for the rod shape of these bacteria, its chemical nature remains unknown.
