Abstract
The germination and outgrowth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ascospores were studied in presence of different glycolytic, electron transport, oxidation, and macromolecular synthesis inhibitors. Fluoride did not prevent germination and outgrowth and cyanide inhibited O2 uptake by only 50%. Dinitrophenol was completely inhibitory to O2 consumption, CO2 production, and germination, whereas other inhibitors partially affected these parameters. Cycloheximide decreased the rate of O2 uptake and CO2 evolution, and prevented outgrowth. High glucose concentrations led to a gradual inhibitory effect on respiration as outgrowth proceeded.
