Abstract
Evidence is presented which indicates that for Ni2+ in lanthanum magnesium double nitrate the zero field splitting of the ground state has not been adequately accounted for. Better agreement between theory and experiment is obtained by allowing a partial breakdown of Russell–Saunders coupling. The deduced deviation from the Landé interval rule depends significantly on the covalency contribution to the zero field splitting.
