GENETICAL STUDIES IN SOME WEST AFRICAN SOLANUM MELONGENA L.

Abstract

Heterosis for leaf index was found in the intervarietal hybrid, Solanum melongena L.var.Giwa-2 × var.Giwa-1. The indices of the hybrids exceeded significantly those of the parents. Inheritance of plant height is controlled by a pair of factors, T being dominant for tall and t recessive for dwarf. The deeply-lobed leaf form is controlled by a pair of factors, LL which is partially dominant over slightly lobed leaf, ll. An intermediate-lobed form is produced by the genotype, LLll. Fruit colour is controlled by a pair of factors: GM, green is partially dominant over white, gm. The mosaic green colour of the fruit, a mixed colour, is produced by the genotype, GMgm.
