Abstract
Glauconite in surficial sediment from part of the northeast Newfoundland continental shelf is similar in internal structure, external morphology, and abundance to glauconite in a probable Cretaceous or Tertiary subarkose dredged from the same area. This suggests: (1) the glauconite in surficial sediment is derived from the subarkose and/or possibly other glauconite-bearing rocks, (2) the subarkose is one lithology underlying the outer northeast Newfoundland shelf, and (3) the distribution of glauconite in surficial sediments may be used to 'map' underlying bedrock on the northeast Newfoundland shelf.
