Abstract
The momentum distribution function n(p) for liquid neon at T = 26.9 K on the saturated vapor curve is determined from an analysis of previously published neutron inelastic scattering measurements at large momentum transfer using a method developed originally for liquid helium. It is found that within the experimental accuracy n(p) is a Gaussian function of p with an effective temperature Teff = 32.1 ± 0.6 K that is 19% higher than the actual temperature. This value of Teff is in good agreement with the value 33.1 K calculated from an expansion in powers of [Formula: see text]. It is found that the [Formula: see text] correction gives a significant contribution (~ 4%) to Teff but that it does not produce any observable non-Gaussian distortion of n(p).
