Abstract
The strong ground motions of the Kobe earthquake are examined together with the reasons for the catastrophic damage. Soil effects – amplification and liquefaction – are shown to be important. Implications for western Canada are discussed. Key words: seismicity, ground motions, amplification, liquefaction, damage.
