Abstract
An apparatus for measuring the exchange of tritium (H3) between water vapor and solids such as cellulose has been developed which is simpler, less expensive, and more precise than an earlier model. Both the exchange reaction and the determination of sample tritium activity are performed in a windowless, proportional counter. The background activity in sorbed water on counter surfaces is measured independently of sample activity. Satisfactory reduction of the effect of the electrostatic charge on the sample upon counting rate is achieved by the geometry of the counter.
