Abstract
A two-parameter model is developed for the rotational states in deformed even–even nuclei by assuming that the nuclear moment of inertia is modified due to centrifugal stretching, and the resulting change in shape (i.e. the β-vibrations) is balanced by harmonic restoring forces. The rotational energy expression is obtained in the form of an asymptotic series which enabled us to investigate the conditions for the eventual breakdown of (macroscopic) rotational structure at high angular momentum and also to distinguish between 'soft' rotator and hard rotator.
