Abstract
The systematics and validity of species assigned to the genera Haplonema Ward and Magath, 1917, Cottocomephoronema Layman, 1933, and Ichtyobronema Gnedina and Savina, 1930 are examined. Cottocomephoronema and Ichtyobronema are considered to be synonyms of Haplonema and a diagnosis of this genus is provided. Haplonema immutatum Ward and Magath, 1917 and H. hamulatum Moulton, 1931 are redescribed from type specimens and supplementary material, and their host and geographical distributions are reviewed. Ichtyobronema conoura (von Linstow, 1885) sensu Gnedina and Savina, 1930 (nec Filaria conoura von Linstow, 1885), I. gnedini Sudarikov and Ryzhikov, 1952, and Cottocomephoronema problematica Layman, 1933 are relegated to the synonymy of H. hamulatum Moulton, 1931. Haplonema orthocephalum Dogiel and Akhmerov, 1959 is regarded as a species inquirenda. The present status of other species assigned at various times to Haplonema is summarized.
