Abstract
The usual momentum-approximation calculation of the shape of the shadow cone for ion–atom scattering is found to be surprisingly accurate at collision energies of a few keV and close atomic spacings, where the shadow-cone angles are not small. With a small modification to the Bessel-function argument this approximation is probably not the limiting factor in making fits to experimental shadow-cone measurements.
