Abstract
Strains of N. haematococca, differing in their abilities to produce metabolites related to fusarubin, were exposed to 2 °C or treated with various chemicals. The effects of these treatments on cellular permeability were followed by measuring amino acid or electrolyte leakage. Some strains with enhanced metabolite production were shown to be more sensitive to cold treatment and less sensitive to nystatin and digitonin than strains yielding low amounts of metabolites. The results suggest that some mutations leading to pigment hyperproduction might determine plasma membrane alterations.
