Abstract
The effect of pressures up to 3000 atm on the spontaneous and the base-catalyzed hydrolyses of ethylene and propylene oxides has been determined. It is that expected from the accepted mechanisms. The volumes of activation of ion–molecule reactions that probably occur without major change in polarity are reviewed. For all reactions that have been studied so far in which a C–O bond is formed the volumes of activation are about −5 to −10 cm3 mole−1.
