Abstract
The effect of 26 insecticidal compounds upon the rate of oxygen consumption of the German cockroach was ascertained by their injection into adult male insects at the approximate LD50 level. The chlorinated hydrocarbons, dinitro compounds, pyrethrins, nicotine, azobenzene, and the organic phosphates had a pronounced stimulatory effect upon this rate. With the chlordane compounds, also aldrin and dieldrin, this effect was preceded by a long latent period. Ryania and rotenone were depressant after a slight initial raising of the rate of respiration, while sabadilla gave a slight rise but was not depressant. Phenothiazine had little or no effect; and the organic thiocyanates were entirely depressant. Similar results were obtained by spray application of these insecticides.
