Abstract
Tobacco mosaic virus exposed to space during the Gemini 12 flight showed gaps in the virus coat and fragmented into smaller segments. These changes were similar to those produced by ultraviolet radiation in the laboratory and support the conclusion that solar ultraviolet radiation is a major cause of inactivation of tobacco mosaic virus in space.
