Abstract
The effect of elastic anisotropy on the modes of plastic deformation of white tin is studied. The shear modulus for [Formula: see text] slip decreases markedly with temperature, and this is reflected in calculations of the ideal strength, dislocation strain energy, and lattice friction stress. Predictions of relative ease of slip are in broad agreement with experiment, although experimental data is scattered and incomplete.
