Abstract
Stacks of corrugated plates with symmetrical parallel ridges have been employed as spark counters for the detection of alpha particles and neutrons. The counters were operated with various ridge pitches and plate spacings and with different counter gases. Such counters provide simple, rugged detectors with clearly localized corona discharges and are free from microphonics. When the grooves in the plates are filled with a hydrogenous or boron-containing material such counters function as low-sensitivity neutron detectors with negligible sensitivity to gamma radiation. Such detectors are promising for measurements of reactor neutrons.
