Blood parasites of game birds from insular Newfoundland

Abstract

Blood smears of 209 tetraonids of three species, 184 anatids of nine species and 35 scolopacids of six species from insular Newfoundland were examined for hematozoa. Forty-six percent of the tetraonids harbored Leucocytozoon bonasae and 4% harbored microfilaria; 3% of the anatids harbored blood parasites (Leucocytozoon simondi, Parahaemoproteus nettionis, Plasmodium circumflexum, microfilaria); the scolopacids were parasite-free.
