Abstract
A new spectrum associated with diatomic carbon has been observed in absorption in a flash discharge at 2490 Å. This spectrum has been identified as a [Formula: see text] transition indicating that the absorber must be a C2 ion, either [Formula: see text] or[Formula: see text]. From a discussion of the experimental conditions, the molecular constants, and the electronic structure, it appears very likely that the carrier is [Formula: see text].
