Abstract
The physical and chemical behavior of energetic carbon particles in ionic lattices is investigated. Models of the process due to Libby and to Seitz and Koehler are compared for simple and complex ionic crystals. For simple crystals the models lead to practically identical chemical predictions; where polyatomic ions are present, the Seitz–Koehler model appears to give a more satisfactory account of the distribution of radiocarbon over various product species.
