Abstract
The spectrum of a mixture of Hg vapor and argon excited by electrodeless discharge shows a system of bands with intensity maxima near 2 820 Å. Spectra obtained under various experimental conditions indicate that the emitter of this system is HgA+. These bands have been photographed with a dispersion of 1.2 Å/mm, and a vibrational analysis gives the following constants:[Formula: see text]The probable electronic transition for this system is A2Π–X2Σ+. The convergence limit in the upper state yields a value of 0.092 eV (741 cm−1) as the dissociation energy for the ground state.
