Abstract
The retarding-potential method of photoelectric measurement has been applied to the determination of the work function and energy gap of a typical molecular crystal. Three allotropic forms of solid iodine, believed to be amorphous, monoclinic, and rhombic, have work functions of 6.8, 5.4, and 2.8 ev. respectively, and photoelectric thresholds of 1880, 2050, and 2360 Å. The energy gaps of the crystalline modifications are 0.6 and 2.5 ev.
