Abstract
All species of the genus Lotus s. str. which have been karyologically studied to date have shown a basic chromosome number x = 6. A new basic chromosome number x = 5 has been found in a species of Lotus botanically classified as L. castellanus Boiss. and Reut. This finding is highly interesting for the study of the evolutionary trends of this genus which is agriculturally and scientifically very important. The structural characteristics of the new karyotype are described.
