Abstract
The bryological history of Washington State, USA, is scattered and not well organized. An overall study of the moss flora within the San Juan Islands led to extensive searches of the major regional herbaria and a review of the relevant literature. This paper provides the foundation for a complete bryophyte history and moss flora of the state and reports new records of three species, Drepanocladus crassicostatus Janssens, Orthotrichum hallii Sull. & Lesq. in Sull., and Syntrichia papillosa (Wilson) Jur., and one variety, Syntrichia laevipila Brid. var. meridionalis (Schimp.) Wijk & Marg., for Washington.
