Abstract
The ultrasonic absorption coefficient has been measured in mixtures of argon and nitrogen over the full range of the components at room temperature (23 °C) and at a frequency of 668 kHz. An attempt has been made to understand kinetically the relaxational absorption as a function of the concentration of either component. The relaxational absorption is found to be related to the collision frequencies as well as the probabilities of excitation of the nitrogen molecule by argon and by nitrogen.
