Abstract
The influence of 2,4-dichlorophcnoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) on the starch content of the biflagellate heterotroph algae, Polvtoma uvella, was examined at three stages of cell growth. Algal cells were grown in sodium acetate – yeast – peptone media containing, 2,4-D concentrations ranging from 10−7 to 2 × 10−3 M. Scanning electron microscopic and biochemical observations showed a decrease in the amount of starch in 72-, 96-, and 120-h-old cells as concentrations of 2,4-D increased. The greatest decrease in the starch content was observed at the highest concentration of 2,4-D.
