X-Ray analysis of hyphal and sclerotial walls of Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc.

Abstract

Hyphal and sclerotial walls of Sclerotium S. rolfsii show X-ray diffraction patterns corresponding to chitin, and to β-(1 → 3) glucan. Diffraction patterns of melanin-like pigment, extracted from sclerotial walls, are absent from the hyphal walls. The absence of pustulan and cellulose from S. rolfsii walls is confirmed.
