Abstract
Homogenized suspensions of Streptomyces scabies mycelium derived from young cultures were shown to oxidize a number of organic acids. Data indicate that the high autorespiration rate encountered was supported, at least in part, by nitrogenous substances. Manometric data support the concept of tyrosine oxidation through dihydroxyphenylalanine with subsequent melanin formation. The possible role of cell permeability in contributing to the anomalous rate of α-ketoglutarate oxidation is discussed.
