Abstract
The electric discharge reactions of five hydrocarbons, ethylene, ethane, propylene, cyclopropane, and propane, were investigated in the presence of a rare gas. Three types of products were formed: hydrogen, a mixture of relatively simple hydrocarbons, and polymeric deposits. The deposition of the polymeric films occurred most readily with olefins. The reactions occurring under the influence of an electric discharge appear to be comparable to the processes taking place in radiolysis.
