Abstract
Reproductive behavior of the longnose dace, Rhinichthys cataractae dulcis, from Alouette River, British Columbia, is described and compared with the eastern subspecies, Rhinichthys cataractae cataractae. Color differences between breeding males of the two subspecies are striking. Rhinichthys c. cataractae males display bright crimson patches on the ventral surface but these are lacking in R. c. dulcis males. The former breeds during daylight while the latter breeds at night. Although breeding behavior patterns of the two subspecies are almost identical, slight differences do exist and are correlated with diurnal versus nocturnal breeding.
