Abstract
Examples of the use of nitrone spin traps for the elucidation of reaction mechanisms during the illumination of pigment dispersions are presented. Detection of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals with CdS, phthalocyanine, and ZnO is discussed. Singlet oxygen is also detectable with spin traps by following the O2 consumption in these dispersions as a function of illumination. These results are discussed in relation to the applications of pigment dispersions in both novel imaging systems and solar energy utilization systems.
