Abstract
After topical application of 1 μg precocene II, young apterous viviparous pea aphids produced alate offspring under conditions favouring the exclusive production of apterous offspring. It is suggested that precocene has antiallatotropic effects in the pea aphid, although it did not cause sterility of adult females. The morphogenetic effect of precocene was reversible, at least in part, by the subsequent application of juvenile hormone I. Some aspects of wing polymorphism in aphids are discussed.
