Abstract
An expression is deduced to predict the profiles encountered when autoionizing neutral states are detected. The validity of the new equation is shown by comparison with a structure detected in the electroionization curve of neon and attributed to the autoionizing 2s22p43s2(3P) state of neon. The new expression furthermore explains why the structure 2s2p63s(1S) of neon appeared missing in previous work.
