Rotational excitations of A-CH4 II in the meV range studied by inelastic neutron scattering

Abstract

The excitation spectrum of solid methane (CH4) with all molecules converted to the nuclear spin state with A symmetry has been measured with incoherent inelastic neutron scattering. For energies [Formula: see text], there are no dramatic differences with samples consisting of a mixture of all three spin states A, T, and E. A qualitative understanding of the measurements is achieved by comparison with calculations of Ozaki et al.
