Abstract
Black stain in yellow cedar heartwood and the probable causal fungi are described, both macro- and micro-scopically. The decreased decay resistance of naturally and experimentally blackstained heartwood to several wood-destroying fungi is shown. The possible role of black-stain fungi as precursors of decay fungi in the colonization of yellow cedar heartwood is discussed.
