Abstract
Shoot and root development and dry matter partitioning in Populusgrandidentata Michaux, Populustremuloides Michaux, and their hybrid Populus × smithii Boivin were studied in hydroponic culture. Seedlings from intra- and inter-specific crosses having P. tremuloides as the maternal parent grew the tallest. Populustremuloides produced significantly fewer secondary roots than did P. grandidentata and P. × smithii. Rates of root growth in both species and the hybrid were similar after 5 weeks. Populustremuloides had a stem to root ratio twice that of P. grandidentata, whereas the hybrids had ratios that were more like those of their maternal parents.
